Julio is cleaning up

Six days a week Julio bounces out of bed at 5am, which makes him laugh. “Before I started working here,” he says, “I couldn’t get out of bed before 9. But the respect I get here makes me want to come in.”

He’s talking about his new position in the cleaning crew at Australia on Collins, in Melbourne. In three months he has had a stellar rise from cleaner, to supervisor and now, to second in charge which makes him something of a poster-boy for employment services. Julio had 5 years previous experience, cleaning and detailing luxury boats but when he was referred to WISE Employment in Prahran, he had been experiencing some personal issues and was fast losing motivation and interest for work.

His consultant, Caroline helped him with his résumé, job applications, searching on the internet and interview techniques. ‘Caroline guided me through my personal problems and helped me get my confidence back,” Julio explains. “It made a big difference, especially with interviews. I used to be hesitant. I wasn’t sure what to do or say. After the training it was like second nature.”

Ultimately, with his skills and experience, Julio was able to be selective and he waited for a position that he knew would suit his long-term goals. But he won’t forget the five long months he spent training and preparing to be an overnight success. “The jobs don’t come to you,” he advises job seekers. “You have to go to them.”
